Outstanding Surgical Care for Your Pet
At Rocky Point Animal Hospital, no surgery or anesthetic procedure is considered “routine.” We take anesthesia very seriously and have developed protocols to maximize your pet’s safety and comfort. Every patient has an IV catheter placed, which allows us to perform smooth inductions, give intravenous fluids (which helps maintain good blood pressure during anesthesia), and provides added safety should rare complications occur.
While under general anesthesia, your pet is kept warm and his or her vital signs are monitored continually using the most current technology. Trained veterinary technicians observe and record blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen level, and body temperature. This same veterinary technician will remain with your pet after surgery to ensure their comfort and safety.
After your pet goes home, we will check on their progress and make sure everything is going well. If there are any problems, you can be sure that everyone at Rocky Point Animal Hospital takes the extra steps necessary to make sure that your pet is recovering well.
Because we want to avoid any unnecessary risk, we take precautions to minimize any foreseeable complications. Pets scheduled for surgery are often given pre-anesthetic blood tests to check for any abnormalities. If anything abnormal is found, we will discuss with you what, if any, action is needed to ensure your pet’s health and safety.
Pain Management Before, During & After Your Pet’s Surgery
Research has shown that providing pain medication prior to starting a surgical procedure significantly reduces the level of pain the patient experiences post-operatively. Pre-medicating your pet also helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Complete pain management helps make your pet as comfortable as possible before, during, and after surgery. Pain relief during any surgical procedure has a profound impact on how well our patients recover. It also significantly affects their attitude and activity once they return home. Our veterinarians and veterinary technicians always have your pet’s well-being in mind and will provide pain management medications to ensure the highest level of comfort possible.
Some pets will need to stay overnight with us after they have recovered from surgery. No need to worry! Your animal will be well taken care of by our staff and any medication he or she needs will be administered.
